I haven't used this extension but I am wondering how difficult it would be to modify it to allow for DNS cache editing. That is, rather than edit my /etc/hosts file to preview a development site I could simply make an entry to Firefox directly.

There is another DNS related extension that is similar to what I'm looking for but it is not exactly what I want.

Cheers,

That's a good question and a good idea. I'm unsure though if it will work at all, because that would mean that Firefox would have its own DNS Lookup routine.

I think it already does that though? That is, it looks at DNS cache prior to doing an actual DNS lookup. So if we were able to to insert entries into DNS cache Firefox would then use those first?

I've also added/set network.dnsCacheEntries=1000 and network.dnsCacheExpiration=3600 in my about:config settings. Firefox has a default of 1 minute for caching a max of 20 entries. This changes that to 1 hour and 1000 entries. Being able to add entries that are never removed until done so manually would be great but one can always lengthen the cache times.

Cheers,

Hi,
will there be a DNS cache update for Firefox 5? I really would like to use this add-on.
Also you should think about adding a Flattr-button to your homepage ;)

Yes, there will be. The Firefox 5 release kinda took me by surprise (for some reason this time they sent no email to update your extensions or I must have overseen it?). I hope I can update it this weekend :)

DNS Cache seems to be the only tool around to cancel (kill) a pending request in NewsFox, a Firefox and SeaMonkey extension for feed/rss. Those pending request can't be refreshed any longer in the running session, so your tool is very helpful (what should be told in AMO). It is with a little modification (browser>navigator) usable in SeaMonkey with toolbar buttons (tested up to 2.5 beta). That means, it should also run in Firefox 8. Could you consider to provide an update running in SeaMonkey too?

Well, I did upload a version with Firefox 8 compatibility about a week ago, but it seems like it's not been approved yet. However you can install it directly, when you go to the versions history of the addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/dns-cache/versions/?page=1#version-1.8.1

Otherwise it should probably be approved in the next few days
